The Patchwork Girl of Oz by L. Frank Baum
In the last Oz book, "The Emerald City of Oz," Ozma was forced to cut the magical land of Oz off from the rest of the world. This, unfortunately, meant that the official historian of Oz could no longer get any stories about Oz! This made many children very sad, until one clever little child thought to ask why Dorothy couldn't send our favorite historian information via wireless telegraph? Well it was a brilliant idea, and with a little help from Ozma, it was soon worked out so that the children could continue to learn about the wonderful land of Oz!
"The Patchwork Girl of Oz" starts out with us meeting a boy named Ojo the Unlucky, and his Unc Nunkie. Ojo is unlucky because he's lost his parents, and he lives in a lonely part of the forest with only his Unc Nunkie, who hardly ever talks at all. One day their supply of food runs out, and they are forced to go off in search of new food.
Their search leads them to the house of the Crooked Magician, a man who is truly crooked in body, and maybe just a wee bit mentally as well. It was the Crooked Magician who made the Powder of Life that animated Jack Pumpkinhead and the Saw Horse. Making the Powder of Life was an extremely long process, 6 years long to be exact, and he was just now about to finish a second batch. This time he was making it for the purpose of allowing his wife to animate a servant to help her around the house.
The magician's wife had sewn herself a servant out of a patchwork quilt that she had around the house. The girl was built quite well, with a riot of color that was rather unseemly for a Munchkin household, but that was good, because it would help her remember her place. She also added some brains from the jars her husband kept on the shelf, but only enough for the Patchwork Girl to do as she wished. What she didn't know was that Ojo decided the Patchwork Girl deserved better brains than that and added quite a bit to the mix!
When the Patchwork Girl was brought to life a terrible accident happened knocking the Liquid of Petrification off the shelf and turning the magician's wife and Unc Nunkie into statues! Everyone was horrified by this, especially because the Powder of Life was spilled at the same time, so there was none left to save the new statues with! The only solutions were to wait the 6 years needed to make more, or to gather the mysterious ingredients needed for the spell to undo them. Not wanting to wait that long, Ojo sets off to find the ingredients, and the Patchwork Girl accompanies him. They have a wild adventure meeting lots of new residents of Oz!

Tales of the Elytheria - The Healing Field
Note: This story is just one story about a nomadic culture called "The Elytheria." I'm working on (among other things) a series of stories about them. These stories are not necessarily connected by anything other than than the culture, and I'm enjoying the freedom of that format! This is the first story I wrote, but at the moment I have two more in the works, and several hovering on the edges of my mind. Enjoy.
She felt the power caress her skin like fine silk, heightening all her senses, and bringing with it a touch of euphoria. Bracing herself she pictured her goal as in her mind, focusing on getting each detail right, knowing that anything less than perfection would be letting her patient down. She couldn’t do that. Especially since it wasn’t just a simple patient, this was her lover.
But no. She mustn’t think of that, if she focused on anything other than the wound, than things could go awry. That was one reason that most clans tried to keep two healers with them as they traveled. The battle had taken Jeri’s life though, and left her the only one who could deal with the aftermath.
It had been difficult, separating out the wounded and giving her attention first to those who needed her the most. Lianna and Richard had helped her. After all, it doesn’t take a healer to see that someone is bleeding out, and with three people working, they could more easily separate out who was dying and who could wait a few extra minutes.
If Lianna hadn’t had the gift of comfort though, their presence might not have been enough, and she might have rushed to Telger’s side immediately anyway. It’s hard to allow your lover to suffer, even knowing they’d be ok, while you treated other’s first.
Resolutely she shoved all those thoughts away. While Telger’s injuries were less severe than any others she’d treated so far, they still required a delicate hand, and she was getting tired. So, focusing with all her might, she placed her hand on his ribs, and began the work of stitching his ribs and flesh back together.
When she was done Miranda felt drained. The euphoria was gone and it left her feeling like an old woman. Looking up at Richard she asked, “How many more?”
“Two more,” he answered, with sympathy. “The rest will heal on their own. Lianna is bandaging the small injuries and double checking we didn’t miss anything. Here,” he said as he handed her a cup of Kaffa.
Miranda considered the steaming cup in his hands for a minute, blinking, before she took it. “Thanks, this will help. I could really use a bite of food though if the next two can wait long enough.”
Richard grinned, “Here.”
Opening her eyes in hungry greed and wonder she asked as she took the offered bowl of stew, “How did you know?”
“I’ve been around long enough.”
Miranda considered Richard for a moment as she began to chew, “Someday you’ll have to tell me your story, something tells me this is not your first battle, or your first healing field.” She watched carefully as his eyes clouded over, and he shrugged as casually as he could. Putting her hand on his arm she said, “But not tonight, and maybe not for some time, there are more important things today.” He nodded, returning to his normally taciturn self, and she knew it was going to be an interesting challenge getting his story out of him, but she had always known that. Now she just had a little bit more to work from.
As soon as she finished, Miranda went back to work and finished healing the last of the badly wounded. Then, unable to rest until she did so, she checked over the rest of the wounded, making sure once again that no one had been missed. Finally she let go of her power completely, and it felt like silk being slowly withdrawn from her skin. As soon as she had finished she fell into a deep sleep that carried her through the night without even a single dream.
The next morning she rose, stiff, but knowing that was the price to pay for her work of the night before. Walking out of her tent she climbed a nearby hill so she could look out over the battle field from yesterday.
They had been working their way through the Solsti Mountains when the attack came. Their attackers were too well armed to be simple bandits out for profit. Most of those were smart enough to avoid the Eletheria anyway. No, these looked like more of a small army. Which meant they’d been waiting for either the Eletheria themselves, or another target, and either of these options was bad.
Looking out she saw many things. The field was soaked with blood, but there were no bodies. If there was
one thing you could count on the Eletheria to be it was efficient. There was a fresh pile of dirt outside of the camp that told her that they had buried their dead attackers where their spirits would be trapped by the earth. A large burned circle in the center of camp told her that she had also missed the ceremonial burning of their own dead to release their spirits. She had expected that though, she just ached as she wondered who hadn’t made it. Who had been beyond the hope of healing from her touch.
Miranda also saw a series of tents pitched inside the circle of wagons. That was abnormal when there were no rains, but she knew that they had been put up to take care of the wounded. Those tents transformed the battle field into a healing field. What was originally a site of disaster; also had hope. Hope because, while many had died, many had also been saved who would have been lost without her touch. It filled her with a sense of satisfaction knowing she had been able to do good for her people.
She was also a little amazed and shocked by the fact that she had actually been able to do all that she’d done the night before. There was no way she should have been able to heal that much in one night, let alone going without a break until nearly the end. When Jeri died a little part of her had died, thinking of the people that she wouldn’t be able to save. She had set that aside though, focusing only on the work, and the people who Richard and Lianna had directed her too.
Drawing the silken sense of her healing abilities around her again, Miranda reached out to the field in front of her, searching for darkness that would tell her she was needed, and where. A smile crossed her face as she only felt small patches of grey. There were people in pain, but none in danger. It truly was a healing field in front of her.
The only question was how she’d done it.
The Healing Field

Going Bovine by Libba Bray

"Going Bovine" is the wild journey of an adolescent boy who contracts Mad Cow Disease. Cameron is a fairly normal boy until he gets sick. Swears some, thinks about girls, and has been known to cut class to smoke pot. When he gets sick he starts seeing all sorts of strange things, including a punk angel named Dulcie.
Duclie appears to Cameron after he's been hospitalized, and she offers him a glimmer of hope. The doctors can't really do much for him other than keep him as comfortable as possible, but Dulcie says there is a cure, but he's going to have to go after it. So Cameron teams up with Gonzo, a dwarf around his age who ended up in the hospital at the same time, and they set off on one crazy road trip.
While the guys travel they get themselves into all sorts of crazy situations. Some of them are fairly normal types of crazy, well normal for boys on the run and a road trip that is (oh yes, and the police are looking for them). Others are incredibly strange, including when they add a Gnome who's possibly the Norse god Baldor to their little group of adventurers!
While I enjoyed the twists and turns of this book, I will warn you, this is an adolescent boy we're talking about, and we are seeing everything through his eyes. There's more swearing and sexual references than I care for. So if you go for the book, head in with your eyes wide open.

Writing ADD #1
If you know me from one the on-line art/craft world, then you've seen my (usually) weekly Crafty ADD posts. What you may not know is that I've been writing for almost as long, if not longer, than I've been crafting. One of these days I'll write up that story, but for now, suffice it say, I love to write! I even have a book I started about two years ago, but I had to take a break from writing earlier this year when my migraines got really bad. I can write through a lot, but migraines just are NOT conducive to writing creativity.
Monday:
The good news is that my migraines have been getting a lot better over the last month, and with them, my passion to write has been returning. My original plan was to just start focusing more on writing after the Christmas insanity was over, but then I got inspired. I spent an afternoon talking with one of my close friends/sisters about writing, and went home with lots of ideas in my head! So the next day I started working on writing again, and when I tried to go to sleep after writing I came up with a plan.
I'm going to have a writing goal of 5,000 words a week. I figure that's an average of 1,000 words a day, with two days "off" for not feeling good or simply being too busy. As this week has already proved, I'm sure there will be some days I go over 1,000 and some days where I write less, but I reached my goal this week! So here's my report :)
~ Book Review - 581
~ Memoir - 505
~ Day's total - 1086
As you can see - I'm counting my book reviews as part of my writing goals! It's one of the few writing things I did manage to stay consistent on while the migraines were so bad! I also started working on a memoir piece about spending time with my Granny. That one is hard to work on, so I haven't managed to make myself work on it since :P
Tuesday:
~ Book Review - 248
~ Short fiction - 375
~ Day's total - 623
On Tuesday I had written up a short book review (children's book) and never gotten around to anything else with the busyness of the day and not really feeling good. I had planned on writing more, it just hadn't happened. Then, as I was following asleep, a short sketch presented itself in my brain! So I got up and worked on it. I don't know yet if I'm going to expand into anything work sharing, but it was fun to work on, and more importantly, it gave me more words written for the day!
Wednesday:
~ Book Review - 500
~ Character Sketch - 1214
~ Day's total - 1714
Wednesday was my big writing day of the week, which is ironic, because I had a lot to get done that day! Anyway, I'm going to be playing a game of D&D with one of my close on-line friends, and we've started creating our characters. I'm doing a character sketch to get a better "feel" for my character, and since we aren't using any sort of established history, it also gives me the chance to help her write the history of our "world!" I"m having a lot of fun with that as I'm sure you can imagine!
Thursday:
~ Book Review - 322
~ Day's Total - 322
Thursday I was really tired and worn out from hosting a game night the night before, but I still got a book review written! So that's something at least, and like I said, I figured I'd have "off" days.
Friday:
~ Character Sketch - 422
~ Day's Total - 422
Yes, I even got some writing done on Christmas day! We had a great day with my hubbies family, came home and slept for awhile, and after I woke up I got a little bit more work done on some crafty things, and some work on my Character Sketch.
Saturday:
~ Book Review - 409
~ Day's Total - 409
I was really tired again on Saturday, so I mostly rested up from the holiday festivities, but I got another book review written! I'm was quite motivated this week by the BIG pile of back logged book reviews I had accumulated.
Sunday:
~ Opinion Piece - 436
~ Worked on database for Jemnath
~ Day's Total - 436
Sunday (yesterday) we left for a short road trip up to visit my Granny. Since my brother was driving, and doesn't wake up anywhere near as early as I do, I spent some time working on creating a database for my book, Jemnath. It's something I'd been wanting to do before I was forced to stop working on it, and I figure it will help me re-familiarize myself with the story. I'm creating separate files for characters, landmarks, creatures, and plants (it's a fantasy). I also ended up writing a opinion piece (that I'll be sharing soon) on a very random topic! I hand wrote it that day when we had some down time in between visiting Granny, dinner, and more visiting, and then typed it up today.
Total:
~ Book Reviews: 5
~ Memoir - in progress
~ Short Fiction - In progress
~ Character Sketch - In progress
~ Opinion Piece - needs editing
~ Jemnath Database - started
~ Week's Total - 5012
Can you see why I'm calling this writing ADD? I jump all over the place! I have a file where I'm keeping track of everything I have in progress, and when I last worked on it, so hopefully that will help me actually finish things!
Oh yes, and for any one who's wondering, my story Aria's Quest is coming back this week!

A Couple of April Fools by Gregory Maquire

Buy it Now!
"A Couple of April Fools" is the next to the last book in the Hamlet Chronicles. I actually read the last book, "One Final Firecracker" first, so click on the title to read my review on that if your interested. I'm sad that this is my last book to read in this series, because I've really enjoyed reading it!
In "A Couple of April Fools," we join our friends as they sneak up on April Fools day. Miss Earth is distracted, and the Thekla is trying hard to figure out if Miss Earth and Mayor Grass are actually engaged, and that's why Miss Earth's so distracted. The rest of the students are debating the wisdom of playing tricks on each other this year.
Unfortunately, the trick that girls decide to pull on the boys turns a little bit nasty, and then Miss Earth disappears! This throws the whole town into an uproar. Speculation abounds. Where could she have gone? Did she run away with someone other than Mayor Earth? Did Mayor Earth hurt his hand losing his temper at Miss Earth? Did some other foul play befall her? You'll have to read the book to find out!

Is it June Already???
I can hardly believe that it's June 6th already! Normally I would have done a wrap up on May a few days ago, but it's been a rather crazy week, as you know if you've been following my blog! Things are starting to return to normal around here though...as normal as things ever get.
As for around here - I still haven't managed to give my blog a facelift! I keep getting side tracked >_> Oopsie! Here's a run down of what I DID get done this month :)
I put two pieces up that were a bit of writing.
Hopefully I'll do more next (erm this) month!
I did two movie reviews this month :)
Aria's Quest:
And of course, book reviews!
There was also a smattering of personal posts that I didn't list. As you can see from what I did list - I'm still doing tons of book reviews! That will continue, but I'm glad that I've gotten a little bit more variety in the blog as well. I'm hoping to get more personal writing up this month. I have one piece that's been floating in my head all week, hopefully I'll actually get it down on paper (ok in type) and published some time this week!

Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud
"Ptolemy's Gate" is the last book in the "Bartimaeus Trilogy" by Jonathan Stroud. Through out the entire series you hear Bartimaeus lament about the slavery of the demons to magicians, but you really don't think too much about it, because the focus is more on the struggle between the commoners and magicians. In this book that background theme is brought to the front. One of my favorite parts of the book is that we finally learn the story of who Ptolemy was, and what his relationship with Bartimaeus was.
I love the character development that's portrayed in this book, both with Bartimaeus, and with the humans Kitty Jones and Nathaniel. Especially Nathaniel. We already knew that Kitty is a great person, but we've spent the majority of the trilogy hating Nathaniel. In this book he finally begins to see himself for who he really is, and he actually redeems himself by the end of the book!
I really enjoyed this trilogy and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the fantasy genre. It's written as juvenile fiction, but adults will love it too! I plan on reading more by the author as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Looking Back at April and Looking Forward to May
Wow - it's been a crazy busy month! But I've gotten lots of blogging done - so that makes me happy!

You may have noticed some changes around here in the last day or two. I added google adsense. Yeah, I know, it looks a little tacky, but a girls gotta do what she can to earn some money where she can! I've been talking forever about changing my blog layout and I hoping to have that done in the next week or two. When I do, there will be a three column format and hopefully that will make everything look a little bit neater.
Another change you'll notice is that my book reviews are now linked to Amazon! Like I said, trying to earn some money when and where I can. So if my review inspires you to go out and get the book, do me a favor and go through my site to Amazon so I can get credit, k? Thanks!
***BIG ANNOUNCEMENT***
Starting with all comments left TODAY I'm going to be keeping track of commentators and how many comments they leave. At the end of each month I'll announce my top commentator! There WILL be a prize, although I haven't decided exactly what yet. Sorry, just decided to do this yesterday. I have ideas bouncing around my head, but nothing is firm yet!

Looking back, I was able to publish Aria's Quest weekly all month, which makes me happy! Here are this months additions to her story:
(See, there's one of those Amazon links I was telling you about)
I did a bunch of book reviews this month! I think this is the most I've done in one month so far >_> Yes, I'm probably insane. Especially if I showed you my file of written but not yet posted reviews, and I have two books read that I haven't written the reviews for... And did I mention I just picked up 6 books at the library this morning?
I'm pleased with how much blogging I've gotten done this month, and I think that I've seen some improvement in my writing over that time. Not much, but a little bit. I think the steady writing is good for me. Now I really want to work on flexing my fiction muscles. I have a really busy day today and tomorrow, but starting this next week I'm going to try to spend 1/2 hr a day working on fiction. Some of that will be spent in developing Aria's Quest, but I want to start working on my book again, and maybe exploring some of the other crazy ideas that have wandered through my head recently! We'll see how succesful I am :)

Aria's Quest
I mentioned when I talked about my goals for this year that I wanted to start writing a serial fiction, and feature it on this blog. Well, after many false starts and delays, here's the first chapter! I hope to update it once a week, so check back next Monday or Tuesday for the next piece of the story. Of course, feel free to read my posts the rest of the week too :P
The art work was done by my lovely friend Cara - check out her shop at www.carapace.etsy.com
Aria swooped around a tree at top speed. She couldn’t believe she’d lost track of time yet again! Her Mom was going to be so mad…if she found out that is. There was a chance that Dahlia had covered for her, but it wasn’t too likely. Dahlia had always looked down on her with distain, calling her flighty and wild. In her defense, Aria really did work hard; she just also could get caught up in other things that she found important, things that Dahlia had never understood.
Dahlia was one of those fairies that that lived for tradition and family. She was the one cooking behind the scenes when the fairies feasted, and she longed for the day that she would marry and raise her own children. Aria and Dahlia were only a couple years apart, the only unmarried girls in the family who were the right age to take care of the young ones, and with 8 younger siblings, their Mother often needed their help!
Usually Dahlia took the morning shift so Aria could go join the dance team for practice and study. While Aria was officially out of school, she had a thirst for knowledge, so she treasured that time she got to spend amongst the dusty scrolls and books. Usually she was able to keep track of the shadows shifting so she made it back in time to help with lunch, but occasionally she’d get lost in a new find or a conversation with another fairy. Today she’d been talking with Eiowinn, one of the oldest fairies in the tribe. Getting a chance to ask Eiowinn questions was like finding a treasure trove to Aria, and so she’d lost track of time once again despite her good intentions.
Aria skidded as she landed outside their front door. She rushed down the main hallway, her wings folding away with hardly a thought, and looking around hoping not to see her Mother. Ducking into the playroom she found the young one’s sitting down and eating lunch, and Dahlia glaring at her while she fed the baby. “I’m sorry Dahlia I was talking to Eiowinn and…”
“I don’t know how often you expect me to cover for you, but I’m getting tired of it! You’re lucky I was already planning on feeding the young one’s some stew, if lunch had been any more complicated I don’t know how I would have done it without asking for help.” Dahlia grumped.
“I’m sorry; I’ll try not to let it happen again Dahlia. Just, it was Eiowinn, she knows so much!”
“How are you ever going to manage on your quest if you can’t meet your daily responsibilities?”
“How are YOU going to take care of the young one’s without me when they give me my gem to head out on my quest?” Aria replied, getting frustrated.
Dahlia snorted. “Aria, your only 17 years old, what makes you think you’ll receive your gem soon? For that matter, what makes you think you’ll go before me? I’m 19 and I haven’t gone! Darien didn’t go until he was 22.”
“Yeah, but Aeryk went on his quest when he was 18, so it could happen soon. And Daffyd received his gem before Jenna, so they don’t always go in age order!”
“Dream on Aria.”
Aria just ignored her and went to work cleaning up and helping the younger one’s as they finished with their meals. Dahlia always got her so frustrated! But she knew she was going to get her gem soon, she just felt it deep inside, Dahlia would see!
